Plant Sale

I’m debating whether I should host another plant sale this year. Last year’s plant sale was a success in some ways and a straight up failure in others. Either way, it was a lot of work. The reward was certainly in terms of experience, not money.

I purchased about $75 worth of seeds last year on Seedsavers.com and Johnnyseeds.com. I also purchased soil for about $40. I made around $240, then kicked down $50 to a friend who helped me. After all that work, my profit (not including time, about 25 hours total) was around $75. Yikes.

I love free stuff! I might have a problem. I tried to use as much free stuff as I could to keep costs down. I used free planters that a neighbor had given me.

Top Sellers

I sold the most of these:

  • Amaranth
  • Flowers
  • Lemon Cucumbers

Was it worth it?

I still don’t know! I love the social aspect of the plant sale – and I love decorating and setting up the shop. However, it was a lot of work and more than a little anxiety along the way. I may take orders instead this year, and not host a big open sale.
